The College Visit

What should I look for during college visits?

College visits are a fantastic opportunity to get a feel for the campus and see if it's the right fit for you. Here are some key aspects to focus on during your visits:

Campus Atmosphere: Pay attention to the overall vibe. Do you feel comfortable and welcome? Observe the interactions between students and faculty to get a sense of the community.

Facilities: Check out the libraries, labs, dorms, dining halls, and recreational facilities. Are they well-maintained and equipped with what you need for your studies and lifestyle?

Classrooms and Learning Environment: If possible, sit in on a class to see the teaching style and student engagement. Are the class sizes and teaching methods aligned with your preferences?

Extracurricular Opportunities: Visit the student center or ask about clubs, organizations, and sports teams. Are there activities that interest you?

Location: Explore the surrounding area. Is it safe and accessible? Consider proximity to internships, job opportunities, and entertainment options.

Student Services: Inquire about support services like academic advising, career counseling, health services, and mental health resources. Are they easily accessible and comprehensive?

Diversity and Inclusion: Observe the diversity on campus and ask about initiatives supporting inclusion and equity. Does the school support a range of backgrounds and perspectives?

Talk to Current Students: They can offer honest insights about their experiences and what they love or wish were different about the college.

Overall Fit: Trust your instincts. Can you see yourself thriving at this school for the next few years?

Taking notes during your visits can help you remember details that might inform your decision later. Taking notes is super important.  All of a sudden, one visit blends into another and you have forgotten about what excited you most about each college.  Remember that visits are a financial and time consuming commitment. You want to maximize your experience as much as you can.  When I send my students on visits, I make sure they complete a form after each one.  At the end of the form, I have them rate their visit from 1 to 10, 1 being “I can’t believe you suggested this place. Are you out of your mind?” and 10 being “Wow! I am definitely applying ED. Thanks so much for suggesting this place. It has everything I am looking for and more. And… I think I have a decent shot.” Have you already planned any specific visits, or are there schools you're especially curious about?
